Newburgh law officials and Lyft announced a ridesharing partnership last Thursday during a press conference outside of 47 Grand Street.

The partnership was brokered by Sen. James Skoufis, Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson, City of Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey, and Lyft.

Lyft will be offering $10 off two rides going to and from Newburgh with the discount code NEWBURGHNYE from December 31 to January 1.

“Driving is a matter of life here in the suburbs, here in the Hudson Valley,” said Skoufis. “On a day like New Year’s Eve, it is incredibly important that people try and find a safe way where-ever they’re going and of course a safe way back home when the party is completed. That’s why we’re delighted to be partnering with Lyft.”

On holidays like New Year’s Eve, drunk driving accidents tend to be more frequent in number. “According to Triple A, 40 percent of deadly crashes that happen on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day,” said Skoufis. “Really between Christmas and New Year’s Day, 40 percent of those deadly crashes involve a drunk driver.”

“New Year’s Eve should be fun but safe, “said Jacobson. “I applaud Lyft for encouraging people to not drink and drive. The discount they are offering will keep the roads safer for everyone.”

Ride sharing companies like Lyft make it simpler for intoxicated individuals to get home safely without injuring others or themselves.

“Since 2017, Lyft has provided affordable and reliable transportation throughout Newburgh,” said Jen Hensley, Director of Public Policy for Lyft. “This New Year’s Eve, we are proud to work together with thoughtful leaders to ensure Lyft riders celebrating in Newburgh have no excuse to drive impaired.”

According to Skoufis, Lyft reached out to him about the partnership. Lyft hopes to form other rideshare partnerships in the state. In addition, Lyft has formed other New Year’s Eve partnerships in areas like Buffalo.

“We want everyone to go out and celebrate the New Year and celebrate the holidays, and be with friends, be with family,” said City of Newburgh Detective Sergeant Joe Rutigliano. “But alcohol related crashes, there’s no reason for that [to be justified]. We have partnerships such as the one the senator just announced with Lyft. They’re going to make it easy for you. They’re going to get you home safe.”
