Making music on the Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Eiffel Tower

American composer Joseph Bertolozzi forges a unique identity as a twenty-first century musician with works ranging from solo gongs to full symphony orchestra to sound-art installations. On Friday, March 8, he will give a multimedia presentation on his sound-art performances. He will demonstrate live with instruments and through video his music-making on two metal structures in Bertolozzi on Drumming: from the Mid-Hudson Bridge to the Eiffel Tower.

During the program, he will explain how he used the suspension bridge and famous tower as instruments.

The event will take place in the William and Helen Richards Theatre at Orange Hall starting at 11 a.m.

Bertolozzi will speak on several topics inter-related to his drumming including creating music from architectural structures, the physics of sound – acoustics, and percussion. He will also touch on the business of music.

Joseph Bertolozzi holds a BA in Music from Vassar College. In addition, he further studied at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, the Westminster Choir College, and the Juilliard School. Throughout his music career, he has taken professional workshops with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), at the American Music Center, and at Carnegie Hall.

In 2009, his CD “Bridge Music” (Delos) reached #18 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Music Chart. Since then, his “Tower Music” album charted at #11 on the iTunes Classical Chart and #16 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Charts.

Orange Hall is located at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues, (GPS: 24 Grandview Ave.) on the Middletown campus of SUNY Orange. Free parking in college lots.
