Marlboro Central School District hosts Spelling Bees

On December 5, the Marlboro Middle and Elementary Schools hosted their annual Scripps Spelling Bees. At Marlboro Middle School, sixth grader Layla Saleh was the winner. Harrison Solomon was awarded second place. At Marlboro Elementary School fifth grader Ryan (Jax) Fernandez won. Second place winner was Oluwaferanmi Mabinuori. The two winners will move forward to the New York State Scripps Competition on February 4, 2020 at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, NY.

Participants at both schools were the top spellers in a written spelling and vocabulary test. At the Marlboro Middle School, twenty-six seventh and eighth graders moved on to the oral bee, while at Marlboro Elementary School, twenty-six fourth and fifth graders competed. A big congratulations to all those who participated in these exciting events. The students’ spelling skills were truly amazing!

The Spelling Bee is an annual tradition at the Marlboro Central School District. Robin Hecht, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, oversees the program with assistance from Marlboro Middle School teacher, Kassia Messina. Mrs. Kathy Fabrizio, secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction was a huge help in implementing the day. Mrs. Alicia Hudak and Mrs. Robin Amer were Pronouncers for this special event. A special thank you to the judges; Mr. Michael Brooks, Superintendent of Schools; Joann Reed, MCSD Board Member; Ms. Patricia Walsh, Marlboro Elementary School Principal; Mr. Michael Bakatsias, Assistant Superintendent of Technology/Personnel; and Mr. John Marallo, District Technology Specialist. Debra Clinton, Principal of Marlboro Middle School and Patricia Walsh, Principal of Marlboro Elementary School were instrumental in supporting these outstanding, academically challenging events.
