Marlboro Library hosts annual Halloween Party

Halloween is just around the corner and kids are gearing up for the holiday season. The kids at Marlboro Free Library got a chance to test out their costumes before the big day at the library’s third annual Halloween party this weekend.

The library decorated their community room for the occasion with spiderwebs on the walls, purple and orange lights hanging from the ceiling, and black and orange pumpkins and decorations on the tables.

Tickets for the event were $10 per family, which included two adults and all the children from the household. The money raised goes into the Friends of the Marlboro Library fund.

“Our Friends group works hard to raise money year round and we use it for various programs and projects,” Taylor Domenick, the Children’s Librarian, said. “Last year, I used some of the funds to purchase updated furniture for the children’s section.”

The library staff were dressed in costumes themselves, and were playing games and interacting with the kids. The “Bucket of Guts,” a large bowl of green slime, was a favorite amongst attendees. At other tables the events ranged from coloring and creating bracelets to becoming mummies by wrapping each other up in toilet paper.

“I think this was the first year that tickets were fully sold out. We max it out at 50 people. In the past, we’ve had between 30 and 40,” Domenick said.

Given the large turnout there was a considerable range of different costumes. Some kids were outfitted as princesses, chefs, and superheroes, while others were dressed as dolls, monsters, and vampires.

“Some of the best costumes I saw were Wednesday Addams, Sully from Monsters Inc., Thomas the Tank Engine, a sloth, and many variations of princesses,” Domenick said.

Throughout the night there were different activities, one of which was the guessing game where kids guessed how many candy corns were in a jar and whoever was closest won a prize. Scarecrow Dorney Kirsten, 7, was the lucky winner of different books and snacks.

The parents with their children were happy to have somewhere to be and give their kids a chance to socialize with friends. Most of the children in attendance were frequent visitors to the library and the staff members knew and remembered every child by name. Girl Scout Troop 60220 was in attendance and it was great to see them all have fun together in a different setting, said Domenick.

“We’re happy to celebrate the holiday, it’s always exciting to kick off the season,” Jane Koenig said.
