Marlboro’s Braxxdon Dawson establishes new school records

Posted

Braxxdon Dawson is headed to SUNY Delhi to run and study construction management, and the Marlboro senior has set his mark on the Dukes’ program by setting four school records.

Dawson has the school record in 600, 1000-meters and as a member of the 3,200-meter relay team. And this spring he set a fourth mark with a new record in the 800-meter run, which stood since 1966.

“I just ran,” said Dawson, of the origins of his competitive running, “and I liked it.”
Dawson’s new record in the 800-meter runs is 1:56.58, about half a second faster than the old record.

Dawson is now one of the most prolific runners ever at Marlboro, and it’s not something, with four school records, he ever envisioned when he started running for the Dukes.

“No,” he said, “not at all.”

Dawson’s final chance to get to the state meet is coming soon as the spring season comes to an end. He’s been to state meet twice during the indoor season and once outdoors. Now he needs to cut about half a second off his 800-meter school record to reach the state super-standard in the event to get to the state meet without winning the qualifier.

“It means I go to states no matter what,” he said. “My goal is just to hit that.”

After he graduates from Marlboro next month, Dawson will look forward to college and move beyond the accolades that he has achieved for the Dukes’ running program.

And he plans to pursue running on the collegiate level at SUNY Delhi with the same, steady methodology that he has done so for the Dukes.

“Just keep lowering my times,” he said, “and just have fun with it, really.”
