At their last meeting, the Marlborough Town Board announced their 2020 preliminary budget and set a public hearing on it for Monday, October 14 at 7 p.m. at town hall.

The budget appropriation for next year stands at $9,989,554. The board will offset this amount with revenues totaling $2,363,822 and will tap their unexpended fund balance by $125,000, bringing the amount that will be collected by residents in the tax levy to $7,500,732.

Lanzetta said as the town moves through the process of compiling the 2020 budget he expects the town’s General Fund to go from an increase of 2.30% down to 2.04% and the Highway General fund will remain the same at a -1.17% increase. Overall he expects the town’s budget to drop from a 1.02% increase to a .86% increase.

Supervisor Al Lanzetta highlighted the proposed increase to a homeowner: on a home assessed at $150,000 the increase in taxes from this year to next year is $10.50; on a home assessed at $200,000 residents will see an increase of $14; on a home assessed at $250,000 the increase amounts to $17.50 and a home at $300,000 will pay $21 more than last year and a home assessed at $400,000 will pay $28 more than last year. He said when the budget is finalized he expects these dollar increases to be slightly lower.

Lanzetta said the town budget tax increases is far less than, “what you saw with your school tax. We work very hard to keep our property tax low. Once again we’re below the tax cap of 2% (by $61,657) and once again I think we’ve done an extraordinary job of keeping taxes low for the taxpayers of Marlborough.” He stressed that the

Town Board has no control over the school taxes.
Lanzetta thanked Councilman Scott Corcoran and Budget Director Christine Wilklow and the rest of the Town Board for their hard work on next year’s budget.

The board stressed that this is the preliminary budget and in the coming few weeks adjustments will be made before it becomes the final budget.
