Three New York City men were arrested on Friday in the Town of Lloyd following a phone money scam in which they conned a Florida woman into sending them $9,500.

Anthony Amonte, 29, of Manhattan and Juan Aracena, 25, and Steven Diaz, 27, both of the Bronx, were taken into custody when they went to a Highland address to pick up a second payment. After a week-long investigation, they were charged with attempted grand larceny and conspiracy.

Lloyd Police were alerted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida of a 77-year-old Fort Myers woman who was the victim of a phone money scam.

The victim had previously sent $9,500 to an address in Highland to a person who called her and was impersonating an attorney who claimed to be representing her grandson who was in jail and needed money.

A second payment of $10,500 was requested from the victim one week later to be sent to an address in Highland where town police nabbed the three who were picking up the second package.

All three were sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.
