Observances mark Memorial Day weekend

The long holiday weekend that kicks off the summer season is also a time to pause and remember those who made the supreme sacrifice. Many communities will have their own observances this weekend.

A partial is list included here:

Town of Plattekill.

Step off 1 p.m. from Town Hall, Corner of Routes 32 & 44-55, to travel South on Route 32 to Felton Park. Memorial Service to follow.

City of Newburgh.

Join the Committee in honoring our deceased veterans as they visit 17 area cemeteries and monuments for wreath laying and services with a Color Guard. The motorcade will depart from the former American Legion Hall, 62 Grand St. at 8:30 a.m. and visit all area cemeteries to place wreaths and flags.

Town of Marlborough.

Step off is at 1 p.m. from Marlboro High School. The route continues down Plattekill Road and Western Avenue to Route 9W and ends at Marlboro Elementary School at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Town of Newburgh.

The Town of Newburgh American Legion will be holding a Memorial Day parade at 1 p.m. The parade will start at the American Legion Hall on Union Avenue with the parade route as follows: Union Avenue, right onto Route 300, left onto Route 52 (South Plank Road), left onto Powder Mill Road ending at Algonquin Park with a memorial ceremony immediately after the end of the parade. The parade route will begin to close around 11 a.m. with all roads being closed by 12:30 p.m.

The Town Recreation Department will provide Shuttle Service for parade participants beginning at 10:30 a.m. from the parking areas of Cronomer Park Softball Fields.

To avoid traffic congestion, participants are encouraged to utilize the shuttle service. Please contact the Recreation Department at (845) 564-7815 for further information.

Town of Montgomery.

Service will be held at the Town Government Center, 110 Bracken Road. Lineup is at 1:30 p.m. for a short parade which begins at 2 p.m. The ceremony will follow immediately.

New Windsor.

Memorial Day Eve Service of memory, grief and hope at 5:30 p.m. at the New Windsor Cantonment. The service, sponsored by the Greater Newburgh Interfaith Council, will include story sharing, music and rituals of remembrance. It will take place at the Temple of Virtue at 374 Temple Hill Road, (Route 300), adjacent to the Purple Heart Hall of Honor.

Town of Crawford/Pine Bush.

Line-up behind Crispell Middle School, 77 Maple Avenue, Pine Bush at 8:30 a.m. Step-off at 9 a.m. Ceremony after the parade at Red Mills Town Park. In case of rain parade will be canceled but the ceremony will take place at the park pavilion at 9:30 a.m.

Highland/Town of Lloyd.

Line-up at 9 a.m. Main Street. Line-up on Phillips Avenue by St. Augustine’s School, march to New Paltz Road, to village to Main Street, right on Vineyard, to Milton Avenue, right on Van Wagner, back to Vineyard, take a right on Vineyard, back to the village and the annual ceremony in the village square in front of the Highland Methodist Church. Memorial service to follow. Sponsored by American Legion Post 193, Highland.

Maybrook.

Parade begins at 9 a.m. with a service immediately following at the Frederick Myers Veterans Memorial Monument in the park.

City of Newburgh.

Lineup at 9:15 a.m. The Memorial Day Parade steps off from its formation on West and Third Streets. promptly at 10 a.m. The Parade proceeds down West St. to Broadway, then turns onto Liberty St. and continues into Washington’s Headquarters.

Memorial Day Services will begin at Washington’s Headquarters at approximately 11:30 a.m. Parade participants and the public are encouraged to attend. Please plan to attend.

Memorial Day observances in the City of Newburgh will conclude with the reading of the names of all deceased veterans since World War I at the Orange County Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Liberty St. and Leroy Pl. at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 27. Members who would like to read the names of their veterans are most welcome to do so. For more information, contact Regina Angelo at (845) 565-5429.

Walden.

The parade will commence at 9:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. The parade route will be from Main Street to Municipal Square. The program will begin at 10 a.m. in the Square

Hamlet of Wallkill.

Step off will be at 11a.m. from the Borden Middle School in the Hamlet of Wallkill, proceeding on Bona Ventura to the Wallkill Public Library.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be conducted in front of the library followed by refreshments in the community room of the Shawangunk Town Hall.

In the event of rain, the parade and will be canceled. The Memorial Day Ceremony will then be held at the Wallkill Senior High School on Robinson Drive at 11 am. Followed with refreshments at the town hall as planned.

Village of Montgomery.

Step off at 11 a.m. by the Grange hall. Same one-mile route as in past years. Short patriotic ceremony and free refreshments conclude the service in the park.
