Plattekill Board gets a hemp lesson at Aug. 7 meeting

The Plattekill Town Board received a lesson on the benefits of hemp during their August 7 meeting.

Gail and Amy Hepworth of Hepworth farms, located in Milton and Plattekill, introduced members of the board to an agricultural co-op called Hempsire State Grower. Hempsire, which currently includes 15 Hudson Valley farms, are taking advantage of the economic benefits of adding hemp to their current crops in order to produce organically grown CBD oils. In New York State, the growing of CBD hemp for commercial use became legal in 2018. Hepworth farms received a license to grow hemp in January of 2018.

Social Media Policy
As social media becomes more commonplace in town government, the Plattekill Town Board is beginning to look at creating a Town of Plattekill social media policy.

Currently, many Plattekill departments and committees use Facebook to relay information to residents. While no complaints have been raised, board members feel it’s important to look forward.

After a brief discussion by board members, the board will start gathering information on social media policies from neighboring towns and state organizations.

Modena Fire and Rescue
The Modena Fire and Rescue sent a letter addressed to the Town Board stating that their members will no longer be available to park cars during the Town of Plattekill’s Red, White, and Blue celebration.

Members of the Modena Fire and Rescue, all volunteers, have graciously assisted the town during their annual Independence Day celebration for many years. However, the organization’s participation in the yearly event has left the Firehouse understaffed. Without enough volunteers available, the company has had difficulty responding to emergencies in the community.

While they may not be parking cars next year, the Modena Fire and Rescue assured the Town Board that they would be on site to handle any medical emergencies at the event. Councilman Dean DePew, while saddened to hear the news, was thankful for all the years the company volunteered at the event. He, along with the other members of the Town Board, publicly thanked the Modena Fire and Rescue for their service to the Town of Plattekill. Plattekill’s other volunteer fire company, Plattekill Fire Rescue, also volunteers to help with car parking during the Red, White and Blue event, were also recognized by the Town Board for their service.

The next Plattekill Town Board meeting will take place on July 21 at 7pm at the Plattekill Town Hall.
