The Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library in Milton celebrates its stellar volunteers on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. (an hour prior to the monthly board meeting). All are welcome to attend a presentation and reception to recognize our 2023 recipients of the Patricia K. Russo Award, given in memory of this outstanding pillar of the community.

Friends, family and library fans are invited to meet and greet Monica Bishop, front-desk volunteer, who gives generously of her time; Devin Brooks, MHS senior, who moved mountains of boxes during remodeling; and Kayleigh Tomanelli-Cicuto, who boxed and shelved books weekly.

The Board of Trustees provides refreshments for the event taking place in the library’s Community Room from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Marlboro Free Library
The Great Community Give Back, held on October 21, is a day of participation in meaningful, service-oriented experiences. In celebration of this day, the Marlboro Library will be partnering with other Ulster County libraries to collect non-perishable food items from now until October 31. Items dropped off at the library will be donated to the town’s local food pantry in time for the holidays.

Join us at the Marlboro Library on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for outdoor fun and games for the whole family, including a fall story time, a special craft, snacks, a fall raffle basket, face painting and more! Halloween costumes are encouraged. The Book Barn will be open during the festival from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for the second-to-last time before closing for the year, so stock up on used books for the winter!

In-person registration is required. Tickets are $10 per family and are available at the circulation desk. The rain date for this event will be Sunday, October 15, at the same time. This fundraiser, hosted by the Friends of the MFL, will take place outdoors, in the side parking lot. Tickets are not required to browse the book sale.

School Events/News
Members of the Marlboro High School Varsity Boys Golf team got to take part in the 11th annual Carmenstrong Golf Tournament, which was held at Apple Greens Golf Course on September 30. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Carmenstrong Memorial Foundation, which makes yearly contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Sparrows Nest, in honor of Carmen Congelli, a Marlboro resident who lost her battle to Sarcoma Cancer in 2011.

October is National Principals Month, and the Marlboro Central School District would like to take this opportunity to recognize its hard-working principals! Thank you to Marlboro High School Principal Ryan Lawler, Marlboro Middle School Principal Debra Clinton, and Marlboro Elementary School Principal Jena Thomas for all that you do to support our students!

Did you know that October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month? Please join the Marlboro Central School District in pledging to end all forms of bullying in our schools. Let’s learn how to identify bullying and stand up to it safely. For information and resources, visit stopbullying.gov.

Shout out to our amazing Marlboro cheerleaders, who have been doing a fantastic job this fall! Most recently, the girls could be found on the sidelines hyping up the crowd and the players as the Varsity Football team brought home their fourth win of the season against Red Hook on Saturday.

We are thrilled to share that Marlboro High School’s very own Thomas Rusk has been recognized as a semifinalist in this year’s National Merit Scholarship competition!

This program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships. Students who are U.S. citizens, who plan to go to college, and who take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) in October of their junior year are eligible to receive National Merit distinctions and scholarships through the program. Thomas’ PSAT score made him eligible to continue in the program, and he is now in the process of completing an application that will allow him to be considered for a National Merit Scholarship.

This incredible achievement is a testament to Thomas’s dedication to academic excellence, and we couldn’t be prouder. Congratulations!
