The Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library’s Tea, Talks and Workshops Series begins in October.  Come for information and inspiration; stay for refreshments and conversation. 

The classes meet on the first and third Fridays of the month, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.  Designed with our adult patrons in mind, the classes are free, and all materials are included.  On October 6, Stephanie Barley leads a floral design class:  arrange fresh flowers from Hudson Wildflowers in cube vases. 

Call the library (845-795-2200) to ensure that adequate materials are on-hand for all interested.

Artist Eve Troncone, well-known for her wildlife paintings, instructs a series of four after-school art workshops at the Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library.  Students grades 3 through 6 are invited to participate in “Turtles of the Hudson Valley:  Drawing and Painting Nature.” 

The classes are free, and art supplies are included; all made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  Youngsters can register for any or all of the classes and participate in a library art show to follow the series, held on:  Tuesdays, October 3 and 10, and Thursdays, October 5 and 12, after-school, 4:15 to 5:45 p.m.  Do not be shy; Eve is a fun and experienced instructor.  Call the Milton Library (845-795-2200) to sign up.

Marlboro Free Library

The Great Community Give Back, held on October 21, is a day of participation in meaningful, service-oriented experiences.  In celebration of this day, the Marlboro Library will be partnering with other Ulster County libraries to collect non-perishable food items from now until October 31.  Items dropped off at the library will be donated to the town’s local food pantry in time for the holidays.  

Vet2Vet Coffee Hour

Organized in collaboration with Vet2Vet of Ulster County and the Hudson Valley Center for Veteran Reintegration (HVNCVR), the Veteran Coffee Hour aims to provide a safe and welcoming space for veterans to connect, share experiences, and find support from their fellow servicemen and servicewomen. Whether recently discharged or a seasoned veteran, all are welcome to attend and engage in meaningful conversations over a cup of coffee.

Dark side of Marlboro

Join us in the Marlboro Library community room on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. to hear long-forgotten tales unearthed in our local history collection, revealing the town’s spookier past.  An alternative to our annual Dark Side of Marlboro Walking Tour, this in-person presentation at the library will recount some of the stories featured on the tour!

Book Barn

The Friends of the Marlboro Free Library’s Book Barn will be open three more times in October before closing for the year. Located next to the library’s north parking lot, it is open every first and third Saturday of the month through October from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (weather permitting).  The Book Barn will also be open during the Family Fall Festival, October 14, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Quality hardcover and paperback books and DVDs donated to the library are available for reduced sale.

Walking Club 

Connect with the outdoors and your neighbors while walking a local trail! Check our online calendar for meeting locations, which will be posted a week in advance. Weather permitting, the club will meet on October 16 & October 30.  To be notified in case of a weather-related cancellation, RSVP at marlborolibrary.org.    

Join us at the Marlboro Library on Saturday, October 14 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for outdoor fun and games for the whole family, including a fall story time, a special craft, snacks, a fall raffle basket, face painting and more! Halloween costumes are encouraged. The Book Barn will be open during the festival from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for the second to last time before closing for the year, so stock up on used books for the winter!  

In-person registration is required. Tickets are $10 per family and are available at the circulation desk. The rain date for this event will be Sunday, October 15, at the same time. This fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the MFL will take place outdoors, in the side parking lot. Tickets are not required to browse the book sale.  

Marlboro Library Book Club
All are welcome to attend the Marlboro Library’s Book Club! On Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m., we will be discussing Deacon King Kong by James McBride. Book Club will meet in-person at the library. Copies are available for pick-up at the circulation desk. Registration is required only for those who wish to attend virtually. Register online at marlborolibary.org.  

School Events/News

Life is hard but life is good. That was the powerful message shared by guest speaker Hashim Garett during an assembly at Marlboro Middle School on September 22. Garrett, who told students his personal story of redemption and forgiveness following a traumatic gang-related incident that left him partially paralyzed at just 15 years old, encouraged his audience to have more compassion and empathy towards others. “Be kind to one another,” he said. “The reality is you have no idea what your classmates are going through.”

He also urged the Dukes to seek help if they need it. “You are surrounded by adults who care about you and want to see you succeed,” he said. Students, who had listened intently to Garrett’s story, left the assembly just a little more informed—and empathetic—that day. Thank you to Mr. Garrett for sharing with us!

Attention, High School students and parents! Marlboro High School will be hosting a College Fair on Wednesday, October 4, from 6 - 8 p.m. Michael Roe, Dean of Enrollment Management at SUNY Dutchess, will begin the evening with a presentation on college searches and the admissions process in the school auditorium. At 6:30 p.m., guests will move to the gymnasium where they will have the opportunity to speak with admissions representatives from a variety of colleges and universities to learn more about their campuses, programs, and more. Please join us in giving a warm “Dukes welcome” to Officer Ryan Greaven, who will be serving as the new School Resource Officer at Marlboro High School. Officer Greaven, who graduated from Marlboro in 2015, has taken over for Sergeant Eric Masten following his recent promotion within the Town of Marlborough Police Department. Weekly Recipe
Carrot Soup -Recipe by Joan Carney

Ingredients
3 pounds carrots, chopped.
6 cups chicken stock
3 cloves garlic, chopped.
2 tablespoons dried dill weed.
¼ pound butter
1 ½ teaspoons salt

Directions:
Step 1 In a medium-sized stockpot, over high heat, combine chicken stock, carrots, garlic, dill weed, salt, and butter. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until carrots are soft.
Step 2 Puree soup in a blender; return to the stockpot and simmer for an additional 30 to 45 minutes. Season with additional dill or garlic if needed.
