Symphony captures ‘Play of the Waves’

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will musically depict the shifting moods and shapes of the ocean in a concert on Saturday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Aquinas Hall on the Mount Saint Mary College campus in Newburgh. “Play of the Waves,” under the direction of Maestro Russell Ger, will feature the works of four international masters: Edward Elgar (Britain), Benjamin Britten (Britain), Andreas Makris (Greece), and Claude Debussy (France).

“Composers have long been inspired by both the awesome majesty and serenity that the Seven Seas provide,” Ger noted. “Each selection on the June 10 program captures multiple aspects of the most powerful natural phenomenon we regularly encounter, be it wild, tumultuous, tranquil, placid, terrifying or exhilarating. This is a wonderful companion piece to the “Wings Unfurled” concert we performed in early May that concertgoers are still taking about.” The repertoire includes Elgar’s lushly Romantic vocal work “Sea Pictures,” Britten’s haunting “Four Sea Interludes,” extracted from his opera Peter Grimes, Makris’ spirited “Hellenic Odyssey,” and Debussy’s justifiably celebrated “La Mer.”
