Town of Plattekill gets playground grant

The Town of Plattekill will be able to upgrade its playground equipment at Thomas Felten Park after receiving $100,000 from Ulster County’s Municipal Parks and Recreation program.

Plattekill will match the $100,000 grant to get new playground equipment and also make Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements at the park.

Deputy Supervisor Dean DePew Sr. announced that the town had received the grant at the July 19 Town Board meeting. He presided over the meeting in the absence of Supervisor Jennifer Salemo.

“That’s going to be another great project and another addition to our park that definitely will be enjoyed by all,” DePew said. “Things are moving forward in the town.”

In other news, the board voted 3-0 to approve four local companies to handle towing in the town in 2023. Councilman Wilfrido Castillo Jr. wasn’t present for the vote. He arrived at the meeting after the vote.

The four companies will handle any towing in the town on a rotating basis. The four companies are Highland-based Autos by Joseph and Nicky D’s Towing and Recovery, and Town of Plattekill-based Modena Collision and Potter’s Collision and Towing.

The board adopted the town’s first towing ordinance in May 2022 after former Supervisor Joseph Croce said in July 2021 the town needed to adopt one after towing companies outside of the Town of Plattekill asked to be put on the rotating list.

Previously, whenever a vehicle had to be towed within the town, the towing was rotated between town operators Modena Collision and Potter’s Collision and Towing.

Town officials estimated that between 50 and 60 vehicles a year are towed in the town.

Shellie VanDermark was given approval to hold the second annual Shades & Shadows fundraiser for the Humane Society of Walden on August 26 at the town park. It will be held in a field adjacent to the park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

VanDermark said she was hoping to attract vendors to the event.

“Share your talent all while helping to raise money to make the experience of homeless dogs and cats better as they wait to find their forever home,” she said.

There is a $35 fee for vendors. Anyone who is interested should contact VanDermark at 914-456-1603.

VanDermark is hoping to raise more money for the Humane Society of Walden by holding it at the town park. She held it at her residence last year.

The July 18 performance of Sass & Brass, which was postponed due to inclement weather, has been rescheduled for August 9 at the town park.

The Plattekill Music in the Park series will continue Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. through August 22.
