Winter season delayed

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association officers voted on Aug. 31 to delay the start of the winter sports season to give schools and sections more time to finish the fall season.
Winter sports teams will begin practice on Nov. 30. The original beginning date was Nov. 16.
“As the fall sports season starts on Sept. 21, we felt it was most appropriate to delay the start of the winter sports season by two weeks to afford sections and schools additional time to play the fall sports seasons before the winter seasons began,” said Paul Harrica, NYSPHSAA President and Chairman of the COVID-19 Task Force.
The NYSPHSAA has made no decision to cancel the winter 2020-21 state championships.

“All the Association did was postpone the start of the winter sports season,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas said. “This affords sections two additional weeks for the season if they choose to have fall sports in the next few weeks.”
