Yaun to host historian conference

Orange County Historian Johanna Yaun is hosting a Historian’s Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 1 for town, village and city historians.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the 1841 Courthouse, located at 101 Main Street in Goshen. It will include a variety of discussions and seminars:

9 - 9:15 a.m.: Registration/Networking.

9:15 - 9:30 a.m.: Welcome/Opening Remarks.

9:30 - 10:15 a.m.: Maintenance and Repair of historic cemeteries, Town of Delhi Historian Marianne Cemetery.

10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.: Tips for navigating the grant application process for Pomeroy Foundation historic markers. Panel will include: Town of Deerpark Historian Lynn Burns, Former Village of Walden Historian Mary Ellen Matise, Town of Monroe Historian James Nelson.

11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.: Gearing up for the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution in the Hudson Valley. Moderated by Chair of the Orange County Semiquincentennial Commission Johanna Yaun and Chair of the New York City Semiquincentennial Committee Sergio Villavicencio. Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus signed an Executive Order earlier this month tasking the Commission with commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War era, which lasted from 1775 to 1783. The Commission will be active from now until November 25, 2033 to best highlight Orange County’s role throughout the war years.

12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Lunch (bring your own or dine in Goshen).

1:30 - 2:15 p.m.: Researching family history in Orange County, Village of Monroe Historian Linda Burroughs.

2:15 - 2:30 p.m.: Historical Organization Inventory report, Orange County Historian’s Office Clerical Office Assistant Aaron Lefkowitz.

2:30 - 2:45 p.m.: Association of Public Historians New York State, Town of Chester Historian Clifton Patrick.

3 - 3:45 p.m.: Reflections on the 100th Anniversary of the Local Historians Law, Town of Warwick Historian Dr. Richard Hull.
3:45 p.m.- 4 p.m.: Closing Remarks.
