Census deadline is rapidly approaching

As Sept. 30 deadline looms, area turnout remains low

Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D-Newburgh) is reminding residents that there are only 5 days left until the September 30 deadline to register with the Census.

The 2020 Census will determine how many representatives each state has in Congress, the allocation of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade.

“It is critical we receive an accurate count. For each person who does not register with the census, New York State will lose $2,600!” said Jacobson.

The participating rate in the 104th Assembly District is painfully low. The response rates as of Friday, September 18th are: City of Newburgh: 44.9%; Town of Newburgh: 72.6%; Beacon: 66.3%; Poughkeepsie: 51.7%; Marlborough: 60.8%; and Lloyd: 68.5%.

“It’s easy to do and takes less than 5 minutes,” said Jacobson.

People can sign up for the Census at https://2020census.gov/ or call 844-330-2020 or 844-468-2020 (Spanish).
