City expands sidewalk cafes

The Newburgh City Council voted to expand sidewalk cafes at last Monday’s special city council meeting.

The council passed an ordinance amending chapter 249 of the city’s code of ordinances regarding sidewalk cafes.

“We are going to be expanding and working with our business partners, mainly restaurants throughout the community, to assist them with providing as much dining as they can, which would include expanding out onto sidewalks, and also potentially parking spaces,” said City Manager Joe Donat.

The city already allows sidewalk cafes. With the amendment, Donat can suspend parking regulations in certain parking spaces adjacent to the sidewalks of these establishments. The ordinance allows restaurants to expand their capacity while safely social distancing.

A number of different safety protocols will need to be adhered to. The fire chief will have to sign off on different applications. Donat said that a number of individuals from the planning and development department went around and personally gave out applications to restaurants in the community. The traditional fee for the permit has been waived.

“I just want to say that I think it’s wonderful that we’re supporting and partnering with the businesses that want to do this,” said Councilwoman Karen Mejia.

Mejia said she’d like to know who’s applying and put it on a map.

“City restaurants are going through a very difficult time as we all know since the beginning of march,” said Councilman Bob Sklarz. “Hopefully this will help them get back on their feet.”

Currently with phase 3, restaurants can have indoor diners at 50 percent capacity.
