An event at Mount Saint Mary College yielded dozens of new registered voters on Wednesday, October 5.

Students staffed a table in Aquinas Hall, the Mount’s main academic building, to help people from the college community to register for the first time, update their registration, or learn more about the registration process. These volunteers were from the classes of Susan Vorsanger, associate professor of Human Services, and Justin Chiarot, adjunct instructor of Philosophy.

The event, part of the college’s First-Year Experience (FYE) program, was “a service opportunity for our students to be engaged civically and educate their peers about an important component of the voting process,” explained Gina Trask, assistant librarian for Assessment and Instruction at the college. Trask serves as a personal librarian in the FYE program and teaches first-year students information literacy skills.

The FYE program cultivates community-based learning, academic success, the personal development necessary for college life, and a connection to the Mount as first-year students become active members in our community of learners.
