Take a holiday tour of Historic Montgomery
A tour of several of Montgomery’s historic buildings and homes decorated for the holidays will be held on Sat. Dec. 7, 2019 from 1-4 p.m. Organized by Historic Montgomery Association President Joan Buck Smith for the Presbyterian Church, we welcome you to our village. Tour several homes, churches and historic buildings decorated for the holidays.
They offer a unique look at America’s past since most have been in continuous use for more than 175 years without significant change. The emphasis has been on preservation of the most desirable features of our architectural heritage without sacrificing the practical necessities of modern life. These are not museum pieces; rather they are living examples of early architecture serving the needs of their current occupants as faithfully as they did in earlier times.
The village was originally called Ward’s Bridge for the miller who put up the first bridge across the Wallkill, James Ward. The name was changed to Montgomery to honor General Richard Montgomery. Many local men fought under him and he was killed at the Battle of Quebec during the Revolutionary War.
Over the past 25 years many home owners, churches and businesses have opened their historic buildings for our tour. New Village Historian Brian Fitzpatrick will welcome you to the Village Museum for local history!.
Our quaint shops, restaurants and antique shops will be open as the Village celebrates “An Old-fashioned Christmas Holiday” on Dec. 7, 2019.
This year’s tour will include: The First Presbyterian Church on Clinton St., The Montgomery Museum on Clinton Street, the Orange County Firefighters Museum on Clinton Street, Mod-66 Salon and Spa on Railroad Ave., the Noorlander Residence on Union St., the Lopez Residence on Union St., and the Comeau Residence: Bodine’s Tavern near the Bridge on Rt. 211, The Powelski Residence (the oldest part of “Montgomery House”) on Union St., The Robert Williams Residence on Factory Street and The Erin Karsten B&B on Kaisertown Road.
Tickets are available at Montgomery Village Hall or by mail: Marge Elkin 96 Madison Ave., Montgomery, NY 12549. Tickets in advance are $15 . under 12, no charge.
On the day of the tour, Tickets will be available on Dec. 7 starting at 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church on 137 Clinton Street for $20.. Questions? Call Kevin Conero 224-5486.
