Hometown Heroes Banners eyed for New Windsor

The New Windsor Board discussed the possibility of bringing the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to town during their work session Monday, February 5.

The Hometown Heroes Banner Program is a program designed and dedicated to those of the community, living or deceased, who served in the military or were first responders and their families. These banners are displayed on telephone poles in municipalities for residents and visitors to glimpse at as they pass by.

The first banner that Bedetti suggested to be put up would be to honor the late Marine Corporal Joseph S. Tremblay. He was a Newburgh Free Academy graduate who joined the Marine Corps after graduation in 1999. He served for four years but he remained in the Reserve. He would later go to Iraq in 2005. He was killed by a reported mine explosion in Hit, Iraq. He was 23 when he died on April 27, 2005. The Honor the Fallen database honors those who fought and died in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

The size of the banners, according to Bedetti, would be a two foot by four foot banner that would be displayed on various poles. The board would have to go through the State Environmental Quality Review Act process.

Once a telephone pole is identified, the number would need to be sent to Central Hudson, Verizon and other services on that pole for their review, said Bedetti. Possible locations for banners include Union Avenue and Route 32.
