Maybrook discusses annexation, police reform

The Town of Montgomery Town Board and Maybrook Village Board held a joint hearing Monday to review the Galaxy Ltd. request to annex certain town lands to the village so the firm’s property will totally lie within the village.

Galaxy has plans to develop property it owns along the former railroad tracks from Main Street in the village north to Henry Henning Drive in the town. Galaxy wants access to village water and sewer. The firm has owned the property for about 30 years and sought development there for more than ten. Initial plans for the first two of seven lots are for warehouse/industrial use.

At a recent village board meeting, members were also introduced to the village’s draft Police Reform & Reinvention Plan that New York State requires of all municipalities. The plan is posted on the village website: villageofmaybrook.com.

Development of the plan included community input, noted Mayor Dennis Leahy, as well as involvement by Village Attorney Kelly Naughton, Police Sgt. Michael Maresca and Trustee Daryl Capozzoli. An on-line questionnaire asked residents many questions about how they view the department and its actions.

“The major themes that were raised included polices should have more mental health resources available when needed, the police dept. webpage could be better,” the plan reads. “There should be a stronger relationship between the minors in the village and the police dept. There are disorderly youth in the village and the police dept. should have procedures in place concerning approaching those individuals and disciplining those individuals.”

The plan sets out to address these and other issues. Written comments on the plan will be accepted until Mar. 12 and can be emailed to Village Clerk Valentina “Tina” Johnson at vjohnson@villageofmaybrook.com. The village board expects to ratify the final plan at its meeting Mar. 22.
