The Newburgh Armory Unity Center pop-up vaccine site was a success in early February – with over 300 residents who were able to secure an appointment soon receiving their second dose. The City of Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey said the city plans to see “a major dosage dump” this week, happening at Horizon of the Hudson and Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall.

On Facebook, Harvey put out a call for interest, asking those who live in the city who want to be vaccinated to inbox him with their basic information, which he said would be sent to the Orange County Department of Health the same day. The post has since been deleted.

During the February 23 council meeting, Harvey said that with the partnership between the city and Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus and other representatives at the state and federal level, they have been able to be “very aggressive in getting vaccines here in the City of Newburgh.”

Harvey said they might possibly receive 600 more doses this week, which is why he began signing people up. He reported 200 more doses would be coming “from the governor” as well, for another pop-up site.

“Keep your eyes and ears open for that,” said Harvey. “We’re going to have another popup.”

Following the first pop-up event, Harvey campaigned for a permanent vaccine city in the City of Newburgh, considering the city remains as the only area identified as a yellow micro-cluster in upstate New York. With his letter asking for a permanent vaccine site, he identified the high test positive rates and identified a non-profit healthcare organization who “specializes in vaccine deployment with smart vans, mobile trucks equipped with medical machinery and equipment for drive-up services to senior homes and residential apartments.”

In the city, Cornerstone Family Healthcare is also distributing vaccinations. However, at this time their website reports that they do not have any availability right now.

On the county level, the point of distribution, located at 23 Hatfield Lane in Goshen, has been busy with vaccinating over 4,000 residents. Neuhaus said they will have an additional first dose vaccination day this week.

“We have a lot of stuff coming in,” said Neuhaus during his daily brief yesterday. “We’ve been complaining for weeks about not having enough stuff. Now all of it is coming up. We have two weeks worth of stuff coming in, but we might have an additional big bump coming up. That will be all hands on deck, times two.”

Neuhaus said they will possibly be setting up other locations in the county this week and to stay tuned for more updates.

“I’m waiting until we get confirmation,” said Neuhaus. “We will have more coming in … it’s looking better.”

He said his staff directly call people that are signed up through the county website for updates to schedule an appointment, which is found at vaccination.orangecountygov.com.
