New Maybrook justice is sworn

Posted

Tina Fassnacht has been appointed to replace Maybrook Village Justice Joseph Byrne, who resigned in early January. But she is not new to the village. Fassnacht has been serving as Maybrook associate judge, backing up Byrne. She is also the Village of Montgomery’s justice, having served in that village for more than ten years.

At a recent Maybrook village board meeting, Fassnacht was appointed unanimously to replace Byrne and sworn in. Mayor Dennis Leahy said she will be reappointed to that post at the board’s April reorganization meeting for the remainder of Byrne’s term and will run for election to a regular two-year term in March 2025.

Fassnacht’s recent appointment was made possible when, late last year, the village board adopted a local law that permits a village justice to live in either Maybrook, Town of Montgomery or Hamptonburgh. Previously, a village justice was required to live in Maybrook while an associate judge had no residency restrictions.

Leahy said he was pleased at Fassnacht’s past work and looking forward to her continued service in the village.
“Tina has done an admirable job as our village associate justice,” he said. “She filled in numerous times over the years sometimes on short notice. I really appreciate her dedication and professionalism. She will be a great asset to our village as our judge.”
