Newburgh Council candidates await mail-in ballots

LoBiondo holds lead on Wednesday

Anthony LoBiondo and Rich Steger are both waiting on the results of mail in ballots before claiming a victory as Newburgh Town Councilman.

As of early Wednesday morning, Steger had 44.79 percent of the votes, or 5,392 votes while LoBiondo had 53.82 percent of the votes, or 6,479 votes.

The vacancy for the seat was originally created back in March of this year when James Presutti resigned to take over as Park and Recreation Commissioner. LoBiondo was appointed in March, but had to face democratic nominee Steger in this election.

Around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, LoBiondo came on Facebook to say, “Since the absentee votes have yet to be counted, we must respect that process. I will report back when all votes have been counted.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my dedicated supporters and campaign volunteers,” LoBiondo continued. “Mr. Steger has been a complete gentleman throughout the campaign and deserves our thanks as well.  In the meantime, there is much work to be done today and every day.”

Some were already offering LoBiondo their congratulations.

Steger did not make any public statements himself.
