Police investigate shootings

The City of Newburgh Police Department is currently investigating three shootings that happened between September 21 and October 1.

The most recent shooting on October 1 took place in the 143 North Miller Street area. The police received a shotspotter notification at 7:48 p.m. They discovered 26-year-old Jordan Myles, who sustained gunshot wounds to his hip and neck. He was transported to Westchester Medical where he was listed in critical condition.

Detective Lieutenant Joseph Burns said that the police do not believe that these cases are all completely random. “These shootings are stemming from group members,” said Burns. “But we don’t anticipate the public at large is in danger.” Burns explained that groups in this case are just groups of people who congregate.

All three shootings were discovered by the police due to shoot spotter activation. Shotspotter is a technology used by the police department to detect shootings with sound waves. When a shot is detected by a sound wave, the police department receives an alert. The police department started using shotspotter in 2017. Despite how new it is, it’s helped the police department in many cases.

In addition to shotspotter, the police department also has monthly and weekly foot patrols. These foot patrols are one of the other ways that the police decrease violence and crime in Newburgh.

“Violence is our number one priority,” said Burns. “If the police department can combat violence, it makes any situation better.”
