Property tax relief-- at last!

Posted

Politicians always talk about cutting taxes. This week, State Senator James Skoufis and Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson delivered. They knocked $12 million off the tax bills for the Newburgh City School District—saving most Newburgh and New Windsor property taxpayers several hundred dollars each.

In 2004, the Newburgh district (along with a dozen others) failed to file the required spending reports for a big grant. A decade later, the State Education Department demanded the money back. Local legislators argued that taxpayers should not have to pay—literally—for a mistake made by school officials who were long gone. But no one could stop the SED.

Until this week. That’s when Skoufis and Jacobson passed relief legislation and persuaded the governor to sign it.

We complain when politicians don’t deliver on their promises.

But Skoufis and Jacobson have delivered for us, big time. We taxpayers thank them.
