Mary Poppins opens Thursday in Marlboro

This year the Marlboro High School Spring musical is “Mary Poppins.” The show opens at the High School Auditorium on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m., with additional performances on Friday at 7 p.m.; Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m., followed by a final show on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at seatyourself.biz/marlboroschools or at the door the day of the show. Tickets are $9 for students, children and seniors and $12 for adults.

Director Katie Budryk offered a brief synopsis of the show.

“Mary Poppins is the tale of the mundane, predictable Banks family who live in early 1900’s London. Jane and Michael Banks are precocious children who often find themselves in trouble with each of a long string of nannies. While in the process of discussing the type of nanny necessary (firm or kind), the mysterious Mary Poppins appears ready to tackle the Banks Family’s needs. Mary guides the children with a curious mix of no-nonsense attitude and magical adventures. It is not just the children who are touched by Mary’s magic but adults and children have all learned lessons along the way.”

Budryk highlighted several of the shows most memorable songs; the tongue-twister, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ as well as ‘A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Feed the Birds” among many others.

Budryk said there are a few differences between the 1964 Disney film and the play.

“They changed the story around to fit the stage better and they expanded on some of the smaller story lines that were in the movie,” she said.
“Supercalifragilistic is a whole different song; in this one it’s about a letter shop. A lot of the other songs are the same, just the settings are a little different.”

Budryk chose Mary Poppins for the spring musical, “because I wanted something really family friendly, a little lighthearted,” in contrast to last year’s more serious musical, “Into The Woods,” by Stephen Sondheim.

Budryk said Mary Poppins is, “cute and I think everyone of all ages can appreciate it.”

Budryk gave thanks to Annmarie Giacoia for guiding the students in creating the very artistic and colorful costumes; “They love her.”

Budryk said rehearsals began in earnest in January.

“I think they’re doing well, they practice a lot so I think that goes a long way,” she said.
