No criminal charges filed

The Crawford Police Department and Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center announced Friday that they had located the person who posted the gun image to the Crispell Middle School listing on Google Maps. It was discovered that the subject was a 14-year-old male.

The Pine Bush School District and the Town of Crawford Police Department received word on Sept. 26 that someone had hacked the posting for Crispell Middle School on Google Maps. The hacker inserted a photograph of a gun on the school’s listing.

This was a problem, as Google Maps entries lead the listings for a location that is searched using the Google search engine. The image was the first to pop up when someone typed Crispell Middle School’s location into Google, making it noticeable to people in the area.

The district filed a formal request to Google asking that the photograph be removed. The police noted that the gun photograph was taken from the website Reddit and was not locally sourced. The photograph has since been taken off of Google Maps.

The subject was interviewed in the presence of a parent. It was revealed that he is not a student at the Pine Bush School District. No charges will be filed against the boy.

“The picture, while unsettling, did not rise to the level of criminality,” read the joint statement released Friday from the Town of Crawford Police Department and the Pine Bush Central School District.
