Visit to Business Office Ends Tour of The News

The last stage of our make believe tour of The News plant, in observance of National Newspaper Week, takes us today to the business office.

This is not much different from the business office of any large commercial establishment such as a trucking concern or a wholesale food dealer, except that there is a particular newspaper slant in the business transacted here.

Supplies for the entire plant, ranging from paper and ink to photographic film, are ordered here. The bookkeeping department handles all accounts - both payable and receivable. The business staff extracts taxes from all employees by the "painless" withholding method, when making out the weekly paychecks.

Also connected with the jolb of issuing paychecks is the weekly War Bond deduction authorized by virtually every employee in the plant. During several bond drives, the extent
of this department's assistance went far beyond that, for a large part of the office was devoted to the campaiggns.

The business office keeps inventories of every item in the building, from the huge press to a box of pencils.

Not associated with tihe business office, but located in the same part of the building, is The News switchboard which handles thousands of incoming and outgoing calls daily. As mentioned in an earlier article, it is impossible for the editorial staff to "cover" every news event in person, so that the telephone becomes an indispensable part of the newsgathering organization.

In addition, the telephone is used extensively by other departments, such as classified and display advertising and the business office.

This concludes our tour or The News building. Hundreds of Newburgh residents have taken advantage of the opportunity offered at all times, and especially during National Newspaper Week, to make a real tour of the various departments in the building.

For those who have been unable to make such a personal visit, it is hoped that this series of brief articles devoted to the various departments in the building have given the average reader a new insight into the tremendous scope of a newspaper pulblishing effort and of the way in which all units must be integrated to make a successful team.
