A 17-year-old Wallkill High School student died Monday evening after apparently collapsing during football practice.

The announcement of the death of Miguel Lugo was made by Superintendent of Schools Kevin Castle. The cause of his death was not disclosed.

The team had just begun workouts for an abbreviated football season after the board of education approved high risk sports that had been canceled during the fall because of the COVID Pandemic.

“I had the pleasure of knowing Miguel and when he saw me, he never hesitated to say hello. He was a very kind and respectful person,” Castle wrote in a note to district parents and guardians. “He was well liked by both students and adults. The Wallkill Learning Community will truly miss Miguel.”

Castle said counselors will be available at the high school as long as necessary for students and staff.

The Wallkill Athletics Department also reflected on the loss.
“There are certainly no words to reflect the feeling of heartbreak, loss, and tragedy that our community is facing with the passing of senior Miguel Lugo,” read a post on the Wallkill Athetics Facebook Page. “Our deepest condolences go out to Miguel’s family. Miguel’s kindness and compassion for others were always on display, and his charming smile will forever be missed in our halls.”

Angela Morales, Miguel's aunt, has set up a  gofundme page to pay for the family's funeral expenses. Anyone who would like to contribute may do so by clicking here.
