A celebration of Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day 2019 with the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum on Saturday, April 27.

The day kicks off with the 13th annual Hike-A-Thon at 9 a.m. and the Earth Day Celebration runs from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. This exciting day has something for people of all ages and interests. As one of the Nature Museum’s primary fundraisers, all of the money raised directly supports the Museum’s Educational Programming.

Both events will take place at the Museum’s Outdoor Discovery Center, on Muser Drive across from 174 Angola Road, in Cornwall.

Hike-a-Thon participants will be able to choose from a variety of trails, including guided and independent hikes. Hikes range in difficulty from “easy” on the stroller-friendly Pond trail, “moderate” on the Educator guided Naturalist trail, and a more “rigorous” hike on the new Stillman Family trail for more experienced hikers. In addition, families with young children may choose to join the Nature Museum’s Young Naturalist Preschool families with stops at some of the student’s favorite spots to play along the Nature Play trail.

Check-in begins at 9 a.m., followed by group warm-up exercises, and then set off on the trails at 9:30 a.m., giving everyone a chance to enjoy a beautiful morning outdoors. Interested hikers can register the day of the event for a donation of at least $10 per person. If you are unable to make the hike but would like to support the Nature Museum, please visit the Hike-A-Thon page at hhnm.org to make a donation.

The popular annual Earth Day Celebration will immediately follow the Hike-A-Thon, with activities beginning at 11 am. Join in for tons of family fun and learning in the Green Zone, where Environmental Educators will lead earth-friendly interactive games and activities. Come meet live farm animals and enjoy Nature Play in Grasshopper Grove. Get creative while working on a community art project with Barbara Smith Gioia. Hear tales from “Jonathan the Storyteller” Jonathan Kruk, and laugh, sing and learn with Lydia Adams Davis and her delightful puppets. Take a hay ride (fee), and enjoy live music by Jackie & John Gioia. Be sure to catch Young Naturalist Preschool performance of a new original play “Captain Clueless.”

Most other activities are free with the fee of $5 per car for parking. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. Please bring a reusable water bottle to help cut down on plastic waste!

According to the Museum’s Director of Development Jessica Oliveri, “At the Nature Museum, we celebrate Earth Day the way it should be celebrated – by spending time outdoors! We hope you’ll join us for our annual Hike-a-Thon in the morning and then stay for the Earth Day celebration in the afternoon. It’s a great event that raises money for a great cause -- connecting to kids to nature through education and play. It’s really a wonderful day all around!”
