Valley Central’s girls’ golf team won its division in 2018, and Lainey Bell, then a freshman, was the team’s best finisher when she went to the state championships.

“It was her second year, so each year has been an improvement for her,” said Scott Warner. “So we hope we return this year.”

Lainey Bell led the field Thursday in Monroe-Woodbury with a 43 as the Vikings won 149-168. The Vikings improved to 1-1 after losing by four strokes to Minisink in the season’s first match.

Lauren Bell, a seventh grader and sister of Lainey Bell, shot a 51 for the Vikings. Mackenzie Dickman shot a 55 to help the Vikings. Cate Armstrong led the Crusaders with a 52.

Four players returned that helped Valley Central win its division in 2018. Lauren Bell has the joined the group during her first varsity season, and Warner now has more choices with his lineup.

“We’re trying to figure out a couple of positions to see who is where,” he said.
