Ben Jones braves elements to win 5K

It may have been the first Saturday of spring, but winter’s grip still held the morning in the Village of Montgomery for the Run for the Gold 5k, which supports local charities.

Temperatures hovered in the 30s, with winds pushing through the village, when more than 550 runners and walkers departed the starting line.

Ben Jones was the first to return with a time of 17:47. Fred Goodwin was second with a time of 17:58, and Michael Grosso was third with a time of 19:03.

Kelly O’Connor was the first female and 13th overall with a time of 20:24. Jean Norton was less than 24 seconds behind O’Connor as the second fastest female and 14th overall with a time of 20:48. Julie Bengyak was the third fastest female and 16th overall with a time of 20:52.

Pine Bush’s Donald Thurston was 7th with a time of 19:45. Two weeks prior, Thurston competed in a Sullivan County half-marathon that was accompanied by winter precipitation.

“After what I have been running through,” he said, of some of winter’s final bluster Saturday, “this is great.”

Frank Colella was 21st with a time of 21:35. And Saturday’s chill and winds did not seem to slow him down.

“I guess, under the windy conditions,” he said, “I did OK.”
