Bushmen lose 10 from last year’s team

Pine Bush’s baseball team finished last season 16-3 with a loss to Warwick in the Section 9, Class AA semis.

The Bushmen also lost 10 seniors, mostly starters, and return with a move to Class AA, Division 2.

“We have some players back,” said Matt Boffalo, Pine Bush’s coach.

Pine Bush moves to that division with Warwick, Valley Central and Washingtonville and plays those teams later in the season in a three-game series each.

“It really doesn’t matter,” said Matt Boffalo, Pine Bush’s coach, of the divisional change. “All the teams in AA are good.”

Logan DeVries, a senior, Matt Dubois, Cole Hentschel, juniors, and Haakon Meland, a senior, will pitch. Dubois and Hentschel will play first base, and Jack Torpey, a junior, will play second base with DeVries. DeVries and Dubois can also play third base. Zach Smith, a senior, will be the shortstop.

Meland will play center field, and his brother, Gunnar, a sophomore, will also play in the outfield. Nick Florin, a senior, Kylan Winter, a junior, and John Lopez, a senior, will also play in the outfield. Greg Bandura, a junior, and Joe Croce, a sophomore, will catch this season.

“They have not seen the speed of this game yet. And they have to get used to it,” said Boffalo, of his young squad. “It’s going to a big transition. Hopefully by the middle of the year, they will catch up and stay strong.”
