Circleville Elementary School was hopping with excitement on Valentine’s Day. In addition to the holiday festivities going on in various classrooms, there was a very special event happening in Ms. Nicole Porter’s class – an authors’ read aloud and book signing celebration.

This book bash was truly a special one as each of Ms. Porter’s students helped write and illustrate it.

“This year we are focusing on our new writing curriculum writer’s workshop and I used this publishing opportunity to take my kids through the process from start to finish,” said Ms. Porter.

Ms. Porter has a series of books in her classroom called Little Dino. It’s one of her students’ favorites. With nine boys in the class who all love dinosaurs, it was an easy decision to choose a subject for their book.

“When we talked about writing a class book, they wanted to write about Little Dino,” said Ms. Porter. “Coincidentally, we were also celebrating a classmates’ birthday. These growing boys love to eat and snack. These were all of the ingredients that went into the creation of the book, ‘Little Dino’s Big Dream’.”

Each of the boys wrote their own page in the story, drawing the illustrations for that page as well. Ms. Porter illustrated the remainder of the book. It was a collaborative effort with an incredible final product.

“This experience got them excited about what it means to really write and publish a book,” said their proud teacher.

The whole process for the class took about three months, starting it all back in October. Their finished product was sent to Student Treasures Publishing, which then published the book.

Each of the students read their page with an audience of parents in the classroom. After the reading, each of the awesome authors signed all of the books for their parents.
