Crawford hires water and sewer administrator

The Town of Crawford hired JCO, Inc. as the new town water and sewer administrator, effective Jan. 1.

JCO is an environmental services group specializing in water and waste water treatment in the Catskills region. The company holds all New York water and waste water operations.

Town Supervisor Charles Carnes said the town will benefit from the expertise of a large company and their expanded services.

“We’re looking forward to working with the new company and solving some of our water issues in the town,” Carnes said.

Those issues in the past year included a leak in the system and the pursuit of a new water supply for the Pine Bush Water Supply System.

In Sept. 2018, the town board briefly considered declaring a water emergency before a leak in the system was detected and repaired.

Also in 2018, the first phase of the Dwaar Kill-Pine Bush Water Supply System was completed, which includes the testing of three production wells at the Dwaar Kill wellfields. Carnes said two wells will most likely be viable for quantity and quality of water.

While the town did not receive the Environmental Facilities Corporation grant it needed to connect the wellfields to the Pine Bush water supply, Carnes said the town will evaluate how to improve their application and apply for the grant again in 2019.

Carnes said the company already completed a three-month test period with the town starting in Oct. 2018. The company signed a one-year contract with the town. If all goes well, Carnes said the town will renew the contract for next year.

Former Superintendent of Water and Sewer Tom McKelvey stepped down from the position to enjoy retirement.
