Eagle Scout candidate wants to honor Veterans

The advertising budget for an Eagle Scout project fundraiser is zero. However, the Pine Bush community includes a very positive and supportive group of individuals, business owners, and volunteers who along with members of Troop 37, teamed up with Connor Hylas’ own friends and family to create a well-attended, productive, as well as delicious fundraiser.

A scout since he was a Tiger Scout, Hylas, now a junior at Pine Bush High School, has had a wide variety of experiences, but recalls most fondly the annual Blue and Gold meetings of Troop 37.

“It was a really fun time to me. It was like an award ceremony, but the best part was having all of your friends and family around,” he shared recently at the pancake breakfast fundraiser held at the Pine Bush Fire House for his Eagle Scout project.

“Although he has announced his plans to step down, I am thankful to Mr. Jim Stagliano for his leadership in the past as well as Mr. Ryan Wittenberg,” said Hylas.

Asked about his project, Hylas explained, “I am planning a monument dedicated to veterans at the American Legion in Pine Bush. I think it is important to honor our veterans and take care of them for what they have done for our country and fought for our freedom. It will include a triangle which will acknowledge all of the branches of the military, a stone monument, and a bench for visitors to simply sit in, or pray, or meditate.”

Personal future plans include becoming a welder after high school graduation in 2021. While timelines and deadlines are subject to the weather, Hylas is hoping to have his project installed and complete by late spring or early summer at the American Legion located at 4 Martin Street in Pine Bush.
