The Gardiner town board set a public hearing for the extension of the six-month moratorium of processing and approval of new applications for tourism-related facilities.

The current moratorium is set to end June 13. A six-month extension would end in December.

The moratorium prohibits new applications after Nov. 13, 2018 for camps, low-impact recreation, recreational camps and facilities, lodging facilities, resorts, tourist camps, travel trailer parks and glamping facilities.

The moratorium will allow the town to review the tourism-related uses defined in the zoning law and town code which regulates “tourist camps” and “travel trailer parks” and update or revise these definitions to ensure tourism-related accommodations are located and built in a way that will not adversely impact the town’s residents or the environment.

Town Supervisor Marybeth Majestic said the town board requires more time to amend the zoning code, however the extension could end before six months.

“We have made great progress with definitions,” Majestic said. “We are starting with dimensional requirements, we’re working with a local attorney and an engineering firm, but there is no way that we will have a local law written out at our June meeting.”
The public hearing will be on June 11 at 7 p.m. at town hall.
