A 16-year-old female Wallkill High School student was charged with making a terroristic threat on May 1.

The charge was a class D felony, Troop F Public Information Officer Steven Nevel confirmed. The student was charged at the state police barracks in Highland about noon Tuesday and released with a court appearance ticket. Police determined no credible threat was made.

Superintendent Kevin Castle first identified a post made on social media that was deemed to be a threat in a letter to parents dated April 22. The administration contacted local and state police, who began an investigation immediately.

“If students choose to make comments that are perceived to be a threat, there will be police involvement,” Castle said in a letter to parents dated May 1. “As a result, may face criminal charges and/or consequences from the school.”

Castle also urged parents to stay involved with their children’s lives and be aware of what they are doing on social media.
