GNSO presents ‘The Traveler & The Titan’

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will present “The Traveler & The Titan” on Saturday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Aquinas Hall on the Mount Saint Mary College campus in Newburgh. The program features seminal works by composers Gustav Mahler and Ralph Vaughan-Williams under the direction of Maestro Russell Ger, who says “this concert is the one not to miss this season!”

Explaining why, Ger said: “Gustav Mahler has become the most popular symphonist since Beethoven. His music routinely sells out concert halls throughout the world, yet he has remained absent from GNSO programs. This exhilarating musical offering combines Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer with his First Symphony, nicknamed ‘Titan.’ Both of these were composed concurrently and dip from the same musical well. To round out our roving adventures is another ode to the Romantic notion of the wandering artiste, Vaughan-Williams’ Songs of Travel. With enormous orchestral forces and sheer sonic power, this will without question be the musical highlight of the year.”

In its third year of Ger’s leadership, the GNSO set new attendance records at its season-opening concert in October and second annual Holiday Concert in December, and enjoyed similar successes in February, March and May. The June concert is the second of four that the GNSO will offer in a 3-month period..
