I’m writing in response to the letter suggesting a way to stop terrorism in the U.S. in three simple steps. The writer asks you to look at your clothing to see if you are a member of the military or law enforcement and if not, wants to outlaw possession of a firearm. When you look around and see only government agents having the ability to bear arms, you are not a free citizen anymore; you live in a police state.

The writer also makes several references to hunting, which is irrelevant to the issue of bearing arms in a free society. The second amendment does NOT grant any rights to the people, its sole purpose is to restrain the government from infringing on the people’s rights.

The writer chooses to delegitimize the 1 to 1.5 million uses of a firearm annually to PROTECT people. Criminals/terrorists don’t always use a firearm, but often, that is the only recourse their intended victims have to even out disparity in strength, size or numbers.

The writer may remember that a few years ago almost 3000 Americans were killed on a Tuesday morning and not one firearm was used. Did box-cutters get banned because of this? No, we hardened our targets.

Taking civil rights away from those who didn’t commit crimes does nothing to stop anyone intent on committing acts of evil. Two weeks ago in Japan, 33 people were massacred. Japan has stringent gun control laws, how could this happen? Simple, the killer used gasoline and set fire to the building, trapping the victims inside. Stopping these killers is the answer. Respecting and utilizing the over 22,000 laws in this country regarding firearms would be a good start, NOT enacting more. The only people affected by laws are the law-abiding, and your solution will only produce more easy victims for evil-minded people.

This comes from someone who finds it ok to pick and choose which laws you follow and which ones you don’t, i.e.; federal immigration laws. So what happens when people ignore these proposed changes you want to make?
