Valley Central’s Jackie Rometo, a sophomore, joined the softball team as an eighth grader.

Against Newburgh last week in Maybrook, Rometo, normally a centerfielder, moved behind the plate to catch during the Vikings’ 9-2 victory.

“Not too many people,” said Katie Farrugia, Valley Central’s coach, “can go from their main position to behind the plate and smile the whole time.”
Rometo is a leadoff hitter. She singled to open the bottom of the first inning, helping the Vikings to score three runs and getting a lead - that was never relinquished by her team.

“I love it,” said Rometo, of playing softball.

Rometo started playing softball when she was about four years old. She also plays travel ball and playing throughout the year helps to sharpen her skills she uses to help the Vikings at the plate and in the field.

“She just puts the ball in play, making things happen,” said Farrugia. “You can put her anywhere.”

Valley Central improved to 7-2 after hitting the ball hard against the Goldbacks. On the base paths, Valley Central’s runners challenged Newburgh’s defense.

The Vikings are young with one senior, but Rometo said they are bonding and playing well as they work toward a sectional berth later this season.

“It’s great. The girls are so positive, and we’re all so close to each other,” she said. “Even though we are young, we are doing great.”
