Little Vikings Bank featured on Spectrum News

On March 14, the Little Vikings Bank at Montgomery Elementary School welcomed Walden Savings Bank representatives including Wally the Wise Owl and Bank President, Derrik Wynkoop, as well as Arin Cotel-Altman from Spectrum News.

The program at Montgomery Elementary was featured on the news that evening. It has been in existence at the school for over 25 year. Students are able to open a real savings account at Walden Savings Bank through the Little Vikings Bank as early as kindergarten. They can bring their deposits every other week and will receive a prize from the prize table as a reward for being a good saver. The accounts started during the elementary years remain open after the students move on to Middle and High School.

“Taking a portion of their allowance and putting it towards a savings goal for a bike or a game they may want is important, because those are skills [they can use as] young adults,” Wynkoop said.

Fourth graders are able to volunteer to be bank tellers and will give up their recess time two times each month to staff the bank. Patricia Coyne and Denise Marra are the faithful PTA volunteers who oversee the program helping the tellers to record the deposits on the computer, count the deposit and manage the prize table. They then take the deposits to the Walden Savings Bank branch in the village of Montgomery.
