Local athletes shine at state meet

Mason Davis finished his final season on Valley Central’s track team with a 6th place finish in the shot put in D-I at the state track and field championships in Middletown.

Davis’ throw for sixth place of 54-feet, three and three-quarter inches set a personal record.

“It was a good season overall,” he said. “It felt extraordinary, stepping on that podium. It was the proudest moment of my life.”

Bianca Staples, Davis’ teammate, was 13th in the 400-meter dash and 14th in the high jump.

Wallkill’s Romaine Bird was third in the long jump, and Louis Martinez, his teammate, was fourth in the pole vault when he covered 14-feet, six inches. Wallkill’s Anthony Nelson was 14th in the high jump.

Pine Bush’s Taylor Pannell participated in three events, finishing ninth in the long and triple jumps and 11th in the high jump.

AnJalyna Talmadge was eighth in the girls’ pentathlon with 2,812 points. For the boys’ Kenny Holland was eighth in the triple jump, and Matt Hellig was 11th in the discus.
