Local teams shine at West Point meet

The first scoring meets of the indoor track season at West Point, Pine Bush, Valley Central and Wallkill found out how they fared Friday and Saturday with actual results this season.

In Division 1 Saturday for the girls, Pine Bush’s Paige Loiodice won the 1,000-meter run. Pine Bush was third in the 800-meter relay. Pine Bush’s Anjalyna Talmadge won the high jump, and Francesca Lerebours won the triple jump.

For the boys in the Division 1 Saturday, Pine Bush’s Jaelin Edwards won the 1,600-meter run and was second in the 3,200-meter run. Edwards was injured during the cross-country season, and he has been working his way back to form this winter.

“Jaelin has been doing well,” said Al Schmidt, who coaches Pine Bush’s boys’ team. “He’s coming around.”

The Bushmen were second in the 800 and 1,600-meter relays. Pine Bush’s Matt Heilig and Miles Moliterni went 4-5 in the shot put. In the weight throw Heilig and Connor Kodgis, his teammate, went 4-5.

“Our throwers have been strong this year,” said Schmidt.
For the boys in Division 3 Saturday, Wallkill’s Reilly Mazzetti won the 600-meter run. The Panthers won the 800-meter relay. Wallkill’s Anthony Nelson and Louis Martinez went 1-2 in the high jump. Martinez won the pole vault, and Romaine Bird won the long jump. Bird and Bright Buafo, his teammate, went 1-2 in the triple jump. Nick Keglovitz and Marcellino Romero went 2-3 for the Panthers in the weight throw.

“We are doing very well,” said Leo Sladewski, who coaches Wallkill’s boys’ team.

For the girls in Division 3 Saturday, Wallkill’s Sam Rodriguez was second in the 55-meter dash, and Aneesa Canales was third in the 300-meter dash. And Rodriguez and Canales ran on Wallkill’s second-place 800-meter relay team. Wallkill was third in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relay teams. Wallkill’s Sera Goering and Anna Coen tied for second in the high jump. Wallkill’s Shea Ross was second in the pole vault, and Bradyn Wood was second in the triple jump.

Division 2 Friday for the girls, Valley Central’s Bianca Staples won the 55-meter and 300-meter relays and the high jump. Valley Central’s Kelly O’Connor was second in the 3,000-meter run and third in the 1,500-meter run. And Lindsey Medina was second in the shot put.

For the boys in Division 2 Friday, Valley Central’s Mason Davis won the shot put when he covered 43-feet, 9 inches. The Vikings were fourth in the 800 and 1,600-meter relays and fifth in the 3,200-meter relay.
