Miller opposes bail reforms

Assemblyman Brian Miller (R,I,C,Ref-New Hartford) joined Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C,I,Ref-Pulaski), representatives from the New York State Sheriffs’ Association (NYSSA), the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, the District Attorneys Association of New York and colleagues from the state Legislature for a rally at the State Capitol to repeal the recently-enacted bail reforms which they said have resulted in dangerous and violent individuals let loose – without bail – in communities throughout the state.

“Since this negligent and dangerous law went into effect, individuals who have previously been convicted of dangerous, violent crimes have been set free after new arrests. Many have committed additional crimes immediately upon their release. There have even been instances where an offender has been arrested for a crime, and subsequently released, three or four times in one day because of this dangerous new law,” said Miller, who voted against the measure in the 2019 State Budget. “The hands of our law enforcement officials are tied and public safety is in jeopardy. This law must be repealed so that public safety can be restored.”

In Ulster County, nine dangerous criminals were released from jail during the first nine days of the year, including an individual charged with criminally negligent homicide – who had a history of failing to return to court – and another person with two prior, violent felony convictions who was arrested in possession of a large quantity of heroin and crack cocaine.
