Montgomery approves resolution for Friends of Benedict Park

The Montgomery town board approved a resolution to express support for the Friends’ of Benedict Park’s project to create a bridge connecting Veteran’s Memorial Park in the Village of Montgomery and Benedict Farm Park in the Town of Montgomery.

Friends of Benedict Park Member Marc Devitt said connecting the two parks would create recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Veterans’ Memorial Park provides easy access to the Village of Montgomery and all its shops, restaurants and businesses.

“We think it’s worth the investment and we know that’s something that’s not going to happen tomorrow, but I think we need to keep planning and keep pushing for the future because I think someday, whether that’s five or ten years down the road, it would be a great addition to our community, both village and town,” Devitt said.

The bridge would cost about $1.1 million, Devitt said. About $455,000 would be for the bridge itself, while improvements to the banks, trails, parking, etc. would take up the rest.

Friends of Benedict Park offered to assist in grant writing for project planning, so the project would not come out of taxpayers’ pockets.

Town Attorney Austin DuBois said the town board’s resolution is a key part of the grant writing process because agencies that offer grants want to see municipal support for the project in order to release grants.
