The Shawangunk Town Board approved a new Hamlet of Wallkill welcome sign at their meeting on Thursday.
The sign would be located by the post office on Wallkill Avenue. One side will read “Welcome to the Hamlet of Wallkill– Elsie’s birthplace” and include a depiction of Elsie the Cow, the famous mascot for the Borden Dairy Co. The other side will say “Welcome to Lions Landing– Maintained by the Wallkill Lions Club Est. 2020” and feature the Lions Clubs International logo.
This sign will be 6-7 feet wide and 2-3 feet high. Hooks are planned to be included at the base of the sign, so announcements and holiday decorations can be hung. The Lions Club is looking into incorporating solar lights and including a flag.
The Wallkill Lions Club will fund the creation and installation of the sign. It is expected to be completed this fall.
Furthermore, Town of Shawangunk Highway Superintendent Joe LoCicero expressed the need for a town engineer, a position which has been vacant for approximately six months. This position is necessary for fixing up Stein Road as well as Apple and Blossom Lanes.
“I do need some engineering done on that site to try to get rid of the water issue,” LoCicero said regarding Apple and Blossom Lanes.
He added that Apple Lane residents can cut the weeds by the entrance to their street. They do not have to wait for the state to take action. These weeds have caused a huge problem, as they measure at least two-feet high, causing the sight of oncoming traffic to be impaired.
LoCicero is also currently dealing with the abandoned house located on Apple Lane. Residents believe it should be condemned and removed.
