Wallkill’s girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with a 10-10 record and entered the Section 9, Class A tournament in the quarterfinals as the eighth-seed on the road Monday, Feb. 25, against Cornwall, the top seed.

Wallkill led throughout the first quarter until Cornwall scored in the closing seconds to take a 12-11 lead.

“Great first quarter,” said A.J. Higby, Wallkill’s coach.

In the second quarter, Cornwall went on a 20-0 run with less than two minutes left in the second quarter. Wallkill’s Steph Mills scored late in the seconds to help the Panthers from being shutout in the period.

The Dragons led 32-13 at the half before containing the Panthers in the second half to win 57-37, and end Wallkill’s season with a 10-11 record.

“You have to be able to score,” said Higby. “If you can’t score, that press will eat you up.”

Brianna Cross led Wallkill with 12 points, scoring 8 points in the second half as the Panthers picked up the pace. The Dragons, though, maintained their big lead, and Wallkill could do little on the scoreboard to get back into the game. The Panthers did not land a three in the loss.

“It was too late, but they played hard,” said Higby. “They came out. They gave it their all. What else can I ask for?”

Mills scored 8 points, and Emma Schwarzbeck scored 7 points in the season-ending loss.
