PB falls to Ossining in state volleyball regional

It was a long moment before Taylor Jones picked herself up off the floor of the Kate Walton Field House.

The ball had hit the court just out of the reach of Jones’ dive and with that final bounce ended the Pine Bush volleyball team’s season with a 3-2 loss to the Section 1 champion Ossining Pride in the New York State Public High School Association Class AA regional semifinals.

“I feel like we worked really hard,” Jones said. “In the end, it comes down to who wants it more and Ossining must have wanted it more.”

The loss denied the Bushmen the opportunity to play Saturday for a spot in the state semifinals at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

“We had a good season,” Pine Bush coach Mel Amelio said. “It’s not obviously how we wanted it to end. They worked hard. We’re always building. We have a good feeder program.

I am sure they’re all going to do well.”

The Bushmen found themselves battling back the entire match after they dropped the first set, 25-19.

Pine Bush led by as much a 13-4 in the second set before the Pride came storming back to pull within 3 points. However, a hitting error by Ossining’s Zoe Farmakopoulos and two kills by Pine Bush’s’ Riley Dimsey gave Pine Bush a 25-19 win to tie the match.

The Pride ran off to a 25-17 win in the third set before Pine Bush won a back-and-forth fourth set to force the fifth and final set.

“I don’t think I ever had more momentum in my life,” Jones said. “I was so motivated, and I know the rest of my team was. We worked so hard.”

Pine Bush took a 3-point lead in the fifth set on a kill by Taylor Pannell but was never able to widen it any further. They also traded the lead with the Pride several times before a hitting error by Pine Bush broke a 16-16 tie.

However, when the Bushmen got the serve back, Ossining had a 22-17 lead.

“It was a good game,” Amelio said. “We fought and sometimes we let runs of points get away from us.

Unfortunately, in volleyball it’s rally scoring so you really can’t do that. You can’t miss your serves. If you miss a serve or get called for a double, it’s their point.”

Wednesday’s loss ended the run for Pine Bush’s five seniors – Jones, Pannell, Elizabeth Deckaj, Dimsey and Rileigh Meyer.

“I’ve been on this team for four years and I’ve played in this gym my whole life,” Jones said. “This is going to stay with me.”
